Powerstories Theatre will undergo its first leadership transition in more than twenty-five years as founder Fran Powers prepares to step away from daily operations. The change becomes effective March 31, 2026, when current Artistic Director Clareann Despain assumes the role of Executive Director.

The Board of Directors describes the transition as a natural evolution shaped by Despain’s long involvement with the theatre and her deep alignment with its mission. Board President Cate White said, “Fran Powers visualized Powerstories into existence over 25 years ago. She has grown it as a creative outlet for women and girls and also as a supportive way for them to speak their power. All this while providing informative yet entertaining performances of true stories. As Fran retires from her executive Director role, Clareann Despain is stepping in. Clareann has the perfect combination of empathy, creativity and theatrical experience to continue Powerstories’ mission. We are so grateful to them both.”

Powerstories was born from Powers’ life-changing 1998 cross-country bicycle ride, a journey that clarified her purpose to help women and girls share their true stories. That revelation became the foundation for a theatre dedicated to amplifying authentic voices. Since its first production in 2000, the organization has grown into a nationally recognized institution, earning a prestigious Arts & Humanities Award at the White House and producing hundreds of new works that center on empowerment, storytelling, and community connection.

Although stepping back from daily leadership, Powers will remain actively involved. She will direct a concert version of her holiday musical Raising Twelve this December and continue leading the search for a permanent home for the theatre, which currently stages productions at venues throughout Tampa Bay. Her continued presence ensures mentorship and mission continuity.

Powers said, “I started Powerstories with a simple belief that true stories can change lives. After more than 25 years, I am deeply proud of what this community has built together. Stepping back from daily leadership is bittersweet, but I know the theatre is in the best possible hands with Clareann and our team. Her heart, her artistry, and her commitment to our mission make this transition feel easy and beautiful.”

Despain’s appointment continues her work as Artistic Director, where she has shaped productions, supported emerging storytellers, and upheld the values that define Powerstories. Her leadership reflects a commitment to honoring the organization’s history while guiding it into its next chapter with clarity and purpose.

Despain said, “Powerstories has always been a place where real stories matter. I’m grateful for Fran’s trust and for the opportunity to carry this mission forward. Working alongside her has been one of the great privileges of my career. She created a space where storytellers feel seen and heard. As I step into this new role, I’m committed to honoring her legacy while expanding the possibilities for our artists, audiences, and community.”
