Abu Bakr Supermarket has launched a new healthy eating campaign aimed at helping children consume their recommended “5 a day” portions of fruit and vegetables more easily and affordably.

As part of the initiative, Abu Bakr Supermarket is introducing a range of family-friendly offers on fresh fruit, including 2 packets of grapes for £1, 3 pomegranates for £1, 2 mangoes for £1, 5 oranges for £1, mixed grapes for £1 alongside additional value deals on other fresh produce such as apples, pears, fig and much more.

The campaign is designed to support parents and carers in encouraging healthier eating habits amongst children without increasing household food costs.

The supermarket’s newly installed Managing Director, Hamza Hussain said the initiative reflects a wider commitment to community wellbeing and tackling barriers to healthy nutrition.

Hamza Hussain, Managing Director of Abu Bakr Supermarket, said: “We know that many families want their children to eat healthier, but cost and convenience can sometimes get in the way. This campaign is about making fresh fruit accessible, affordable, and appealing for families, so children can reach their 5 a day without it feeling like a struggle.”

He added: “As a community-focused supermarket, we believe we have a responsibility to play our part in supporting healthier lifestyles, especially for the next generation.”

The campaign is now live across Abu Bakr Supermarket stores across West Yorkshire, with more offers expected to be added to further support healthy eating choices.

In addition, an innovative partnership with food banks, teaching families to budget whilst being able to consume healthy yet nutritious food along with a partnership with the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, product partnerships with a number of major brands will be announced in due course.

Notes to editors

The story began in 1987, when Abid Hussain, then just 17, took over the family business. With long hours, determination and a hands-on approach, he laid the groundwork for a brand that would go on to become a well-known name across West Yorkshire. A major turning point arrived in 2002. Abid Food Store rebranded as Abu Bakr Supermarkets, signalling both a new identity and an ambition to scale. That same year, the company opened its Queen’s Road store — its first step beyond the original premises and the start of a steady expansion strategy. Further growth followed in 2004 with the Roundhay Road branch, strengthening the brand’s presence in Leeds and giving more families access to its value-driven offering. A decade later, in 2015, Abu Bakr expanded again with its Beeston store, a move that bolstered its community footprint in another busy part of the city. In 2017, the business invested heavily in expanding its product range. Fresh produce, halal meat counters, and an extensive selection of world foods were introduced — a strategic shift that aligned the brand more closely with the needs of the region’s diverse communities and cemented its reputation for global choice at local prices. The company’s momentum continued into the 2020s. In 2022, Abu Bakr Supermarkets opened its Kirkstall branch, bringing its services to a new and vibrant customer base and widening its reach across Leeds. In 2025, a flagship store opened in Batley, West Yorkshire.
