Many Faces of Moebius Syndrome (MFOMS), an international all-volunteer organization, is sharing that the State of Kentucky has issued an official proclamation recognizing Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day, observed annually on January 24.

The proclamation was requested by Megan Brown, a Kentucky resident and advocate, who reached out to MFOMS for guidance on how to request recognition for Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day. MFOMS provided support and materials to help ensure the request focused on the purpose of the day — raising awareness, encouraging understanding, and recognizing individuals and families living with Moebius syndrome.

Moebius syndrome is a rare neurological condition characterized by facial paralysis and limited eye movement. Because individuals with Moebius syndrome cannot smile or show facial expressions, they are often misunderstood, despite having typical intelligence, full emotional lives, and much to contribute to their communities.

Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day was established in 2011 by Many Faces of Moebius Syndrome and is recognized each year on January 24. The day focuses on increasing public understanding of facial differences and encouraging inclusion, respect, and compassion for individuals and families affected by Moebius syndrome.

“This proclamation is meaningful because it recognizes the day itself and the people it represents,” said Tim Smith, founder of Many Faces of Moebius Syndrome. “It wasn’t issued for an organization — it was issued to acknowledge individuals, families, and the importance of awareness rooted in understanding.”
