Research reveals that Millennials suffer with more ill effects from technology than any generation, despite feeling the most in control of their usage.

The research, conducted by ultrafast broadband provider, Trooli, investigated the lasting impact of technology on our mental health.

It found that half of all Brits rely on technology to feel less alone and better connected to their friends, family, and loved ones.

A further third (32%) depend on tech to feel better about themselves, and almost a fifth (16%) of those who struggle with technology feel isolated due to their lack of tech skills.

Surprisingly, Millennials (49%) were found to be the most susceptible to the negative impacts of technology. For example, almost half (49%) admit to being reliant on technology to feel better about themselves, beating Gen Zs (44%), the generation most native to technology.

Millennials also reported some of the highest feelings of isolation due to poor tech skills (tied with Gen Zs –25%).

However, despite suffering the most, over three-quarters (76%) of Millennials believe they have a healthy relationship with their tech, the highest proportion of all generations – and feel the most in control of their tech usage (79%).

In contrast, older people are least happy with their relationship with technology. Under half (47%) of consumers over the age of 60 think they have a healthy relationship with their devices, despite the data showing that they are actually the least likely to suffer from poor mental health as a result of tech usage.

Andy Conibere, CEO of Trooli, comments on the findings: “Technology brings so many benefits to our lives. Take ultrafast broadband, for example, it allows us to keep in touch with loved ones and work remotely from anywhere in the world. However, technology also brings its challenges, and can leave people feeling overwhelmed.

“Our research shows that Millennials in particular are suffering with poor digital wellbeing, often without even realising the negative impact their tech habits are having. Establishing a healthy relationship with technology can be challenging, especially for those who grew up during a time of rapid digital tech innovation. However, simple changes, like scheduling regular breaks and limiting scroll time on certain apps, can make the world of difference and ensure technology isn’t a drain, but a force for good in our lives.”
