Renowned martial arts figure Paul Newby has been recognised at the House of Lords after attending the TUKKA Awards 2025 on November 24.
The ceremony marked the 50th anniversary of Great Britain’s historic 1975 victory in Long Beach, California, where the national karate squad won the World Team Karate Championships — a success still regarded as one of the greatest achievements in British karate.
Yorkshire based Newby, who runs NCAA Martial Arts Gym and The Tapping Foot Irish Bar, was among a select group of guests invited to the event.
He received the Sensei Steve Arneil Award in recognition of his world title win and his long-standing contribution to martial arts at community, national and international levels. The award was presented by Lord Baron Sharpe of Epsom, OBE.
Speaking after the ceremony, Newby said the honour was a proud moment.
“It was an unforgettable experience to be among such esteemed company, including members of the legendary 1975 Karate Team,” he said. “A proud moment for me and my family, for Karate, and for Silsden.”
He added that receiving the award at such a distinguished venue made the occasion even more significant.
