A deeply personal new documentary film, The Boxer from Somewhere Else: The Ken Buchanan Story, is set to be released in selected VUE cinemas across the UK this autumn. The film marks the culmination of a 15-year labour of love by Edinburgh filmmaker Jamie Steedman, who first began filming with Buchanan in 2010–2011.
The film, written & directed by Steedman, charts the extraordinary rise of Ken Buchanan, the Portobello- born boxer who became a world lightweight champion in 1970 and went on to be celebrated as one of Britain’s finest fighters. Through rare archival footage, animation, interviews, and unseen material, the documentary paints a vivid portrait of a man whose journey from humble beginnings to international stardom captured the imagination of a nation.
The release comes at a poignant time, following the passing of Buchanan in 2023, and serves both as a tribute to his sporting achievements and a reflection on his lasting cultural legacy in Edinburgh and beyond.
“Ken Buchanan was more than a world champion,” says director Jamie Steedman. “He was a symbol of resilience and pride for Scotland, and his story deserves to be remembered on the big screen.”
The Boxer from Somewhere Else will screen at VUE London Shepherd’s Bush, Cheshire Oaks, Manchester Printworks, Edinburgh Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh Omni Centre, and Glasgow St Enoch, with more cinemas to follow.
