Sustainable Fitness Meets Strength: Empowering Women to Build Muscle and Save the Planet
This International Women’s Day, fitness enthusiasts and eco-conscious individuals alike have a groundbreaking new way to celebrate strength and sustainability. Introducing the world’s first all-wooden dumbbells, a revolutionary eco-friendly alternative to traditional metal or plastic weights. Designed for those who want to build muscle while reducing their carbon footprint, these beautifully crafted weights are set to transform the fitness industry.
Created by Michael White, a personal trainer with 25 years of experience and founder of HomeHealth, the wooden dumbbells are made entirely from sustainably sourced European oak and ash. The idea was born out of a desire to address the fitness industry’s lack of sustainable options.
“The fitness industry is particularly bad when it comes to sustainability,” says White. “I work with weights daily and realized I had never considered their environmental impact. Traditional weights are often made from iron, stainless steel, or plastic, with manufacturing processes that contribute to pollution and high carbon emissions. It’s time for change.”
The inspiration for the wooden weights came from a fortuitous moment when a tree fell in White’s garden. “I thought, ‘What if I made dumbbells from wood?’ The result was a bit rough at first, but using them felt amazing—tactile, natural, and pleasant,” he recalls.
After extensive trial and error, White perfected the design, focusing on smaller weights (1kg, 2kg, 3kg, 4kg, and 5kg) that are both functional and sustainable. The dense European oak provides the necessary heft, while the ash handles offer durability and flexibility. The square shape minimizes wood waste during production and allows for easy stacking, eliminating the need for additional storage stands.
Finished with an all-natural beeswax and mineral oil coating, the dumbbells are as beautiful as they are functional. “They’re designed to enhance your space, not hide away in a cupboard,” says White. “They’re a great feature for your home, gym, or hotel room.”
Since their launch, the wooden weights have garnered significant interest from commercial gyms, yoga studios, and Pilates centers. They represent a growing trend in the fitness industry to adopt more eco-friendly practices, such as energy-generating treadmills and stationary bikes.
While the wooden dumbbells are an investment—starting at £120 for a 1kg pair and £1,100 for a full set—they offer a unique combination of sustainability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. Future plans include combining wooden weights with recycled iron dumbbells to increase their weight and further reduce waste.
“This is just the beginning,” says White. “I have so many ideas for sustainable fitness equipment made from wood. It’s time to rethink how we approach fitness and its impact on the planet.”
This International Women’s Day, empower yourself and the planet with the world’s first eco-friendly wooden weights. Because strong women deserve a strong future.
