Annabelle Baugh, founder of Cosmetic Surgery Advancements, is calling for immediate reforms in the UK’s cosmetic surgery industry following the recent funeral of Alice Webb, who tragically died after an unregulated liquid BBL procedure.
In response to growing concerns, Save Face, a safety advocacy group, launched a petition for Alice’s Law, in October, advocating a ban on liquid BBLs in non-medical settings. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) have also issued urgent calls for tighter regulation.
Dangerous Practices Exposed by BBC Investigation
A recent BBC investigation uncovered alarming video footage at a London-based training academy, Luxury Medical Aesthetics and Academy. Despite advertising “non-surgical lipolysis training,” the academy performed surgical liposuction during a one-day course in unhygienic conditions..
One participant suffered internal organ damage, and others reported injuries.Monika Trunchan, the company director, who has previously dissolved the academy twice, has yet to respond to these findings.
“These horrifying practices must stop,” said Mr. Douglas McGeorge, FRCS (Plast), former president of BAAPS. “Liposuction is a surgical procedure that belongs exclusively in the hands of qualified surgeons in sterile, regulated facilities.”
Legal Loopholes Fuel Risks
Shockingly, UK law allows anyone to perform surgery with patient consent, provided they don’t misrepresent their credentials. This loophole enables unqualified individuals to exploit public trust through deceptive marketing and social media.
Annabelle Baugh highlights the urgency of reform:
“It’s heartbreaking that after Alice Webb’s death, we see reports of unsafe liposuction procedures under the guise of non-surgical treatments. This is legally allowed in the UK. Immediate action is needed to close these loopholes. Reform is essential to protect individuals from life-altering consequences caused by unqualified practitioners,”
