A former Welsh rugby international is to lead a team who will kayak along the Welsh coastline, climb the country’s highest mountain and cycle 150 miles in an extraordinary 12-day endurance challenge to raise £50,000 for two charities supporting people affected by motor neurone disease (MND) and prostate cancer.
Paul Thorburn, famed for his record-breaking 64.2 metre penalty against Scotland in 1986, a Welsh international record that still stands today, leads a team of nine on the Paddle, Peak and Pedal challenge, sponsored by insurance experts Everywhen and other generous sponsors. Beginning at Mumbles Yacht Club, Swansea at 1.15pm on 20 August 2026, the challenge will see the team kayak to the Isle of Anglesey before climbing Snowdon and completing a gruelling 150-mile cycle back to Swansea, crossing the finish line on 31 August.
The ambitious challenge aims to raise £50,000 for the MND Association and Prostate Cymru, supporting vital research, care and services for people living with two diseases that have touched the lives of the team taking part.
Bringing together former rugby players, a teacher, a serving police officer, a retired Metropolitan police officer, a former civil servant and one participant currently recovering from prostate cancer, the team is united by a shared determination to make a meaningful difference for MND and prostate cancer sufferers and their families. Alongside Paul Thorburn, the team comprises Bryan Herd, Ian Bain, Mark Cook, Ian Daniels, Iwan Hughes, Andy Mort, Simon Webborn and David Wintle.
