Will Mortimer becomes the second Delta Smoke Control engineer to earn AM2S certification in recent months, strengthening the Portsmouth-based company’s independently accredited electrical competence.
Will Mortimer, Smoke Control Engineer at Portsmouth-based life-safety specialist Delta Smoke Control (part of Delta Ventilation Group), has passed the AM2S End Point Assessment after completing his electrotechnical apprenticeship with City of Portsmouth College. The pass makes Will the second Delta Smoke Control engineer to gain AM2S certification in recent months, following Josh Quantick’s Electrical Apprentice of the Year win in May.
AM2S is the rigorous, hands-on End Point Assessment that electrotechnical apprentices in the UK must pass under the current Apprenticeship Standard to demonstrate competence in electrical installation, including fault finding, testing, safe isolation and inspection to BS 7671 Wiring Regulations standard. For a Smoke Control Engineer, whose day-to-day role is the physical installation and commissioning of life-safety smoke control systems, it is a core marker of on-site electrical competence.
Will trained through City of Portsmouth College, part of Portsmouth’s “One City, One College” further and higher education offer, whose Apprenticeship Liaison team supports local employers in bringing apprentices through electrotechnical and building services qualifications. His pass is a small but tangible example of the Portsmouth-college-to-Portsmouth-employer pipeline that Delta Smoke Control invests in.
Will’s AM2S certification adds to Delta Smoke Control’s growing evidence base for individual competence in electrical installation – now a formal expectation under the Building Safety Act 2022 and the Building Safety Regulator’s Gateway 2 regime, which requires evidence of both individual competence and organisational quality management for the electrical aspects of life-safety systems. Alongside Delta Smoke Control’s NICEIC accreditation, each additional AM2S-qualified engineer on site strengthens the dual-layer assurance the company offers on Gateway 2 schemes.

Will Mortimer added, “Getting AM2S over the line feels great. It’s a practical assessment, so you have to really know electrical installation, testing, and safe isolation. I want to thank Lisa Burt and the apprenticeship team at City of Portsmouth College for their support along the way, and the installation team at Delta Smoke Control for all the on-site knowledge and experience they shared with me. I’m looking forward to bringing what I’ve learned into every job from here on.”
As a Smoke Control Engineer, Will completes on-site installation work across Delta Smoke Control’s smoke ventilation, mechanical pressurisation and smoke and heat exhaust projects – from residential and mixed-use developments through to commercial and high-risk buildings. His AM2S certification underpins the electrical installation and testing that keep these life-safety systems compliant and reliable in service.
