An Immersive Evening of Storytelling, Music, and Art Honoring the Icon of the Jazz Age
The Black Mountain Center for the Arts (BMCA) is proud to present Save Me the Waltz, a captivating performance experience on Saturday, June 6 at 7:30 PM. This singular evening invites audiences to step inside the dazzling world of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald — painter, dancer, writer, and the original socialite of the Roaring Twenties.
Save Me the Waltz traces Zelda’s extraordinary life with intimacy and reverence: her meteoric rise as a cultural icon, her creative brilliance, and her fierce struggle to be recognized as an artist in her own right. The performance reclaims the story of a woman who was stylish, impulsive, and utterly unforgettable — and one with deep ties to the Asheville area, where Zelda spent much of her later life seeking treatment at Highland Hospital.
The evening features acclaimed storyteller Melody Sufia, whose evocative spoken-word performance is accompanied live by the renowned Café String Quartet, known for professional-grade performances across Western North Carolina. The quartet’s lush, period-specific compositions bring the Jazz Age vividly to life, weaving together art and history in a night of untamed creativity and echoing dreams.
