Just last month, “running” was searched for over 6.4 million times in the UK, and according to Google Trends, interest is continuing to rise.
Athletic adventures were predicted as a key travel trend last year, and the data proves it. The term “runcation” has seen a 19% increase in global searches year-on-year, with a further 38% spike in the past quarter alone.
Strava’s Year in Sport report for 2025 also highlights a major shift in behaviour, with a 3.5x increase in running club participation, signalling that running is becoming more social, experiential and travel-driven.
For runners, one of the most immersive ways to explore a country is simply by running it, or better yet, signing up for a race.
Croatia, best known for its Mediterranean coastline, historic cities like Dubrovnik and pine-fringed beaches, is still somewhat under the radar when it comes to its running scene. Yet, the country offers a surprising number of scenic and well-organised races — particularly in spring.
Toni Hrelja, founder of Croatian rental platform Villsy.com and an outdoor enthusiast, explains why:
“Spring may be a better option for applying to races in Croatia than early autumn, as the weather is still cooler and nature is starting to wake up. The temperatures are ideal for running and perfect for testing the stamina built over the winter months.”

The Istria 100 by UTMB: Elite event

Dubrovnik: Run the wall, the best experience
Dubrovnik is one of Croatia’s most visited destinations, but while summer brings crowds and heat, late April offers a completely different experience.
The Dubrovnik running events combine historic scenery with a moderately challenging course. This isn’t a race for personal bests: gentle inclines, cobbled streets and tight turns make it more about the experience than speed.
One of the most unique formats is the “Run the Wall” race, where participants tackle 2.5 km along the city walls, including over 1,000 steps.
| Distance | Date | Start location | Elevation |
| Run the Wall 2.5 km | 26 April | The Wall | |
| 5 K | 26 April | Stradun, Dubrovnik | Flat |
| Half Marathon (21 km ) | 26 April | Stradun, Dubrovnik | +150 metres |
Zadar: Wings for Life World Run
If there’s one race that completely redefines the format, it’s the Wings for Life World Run.
Held in Zadar on 10th May 2026, this global event replaces the traditional finish line with a “Catcher Car”, a moving finish that gradually eliminates runners. Once it passes you, your race is over.
The flat, scenic coastal route makes it accessible for beginners, while the unpredictable format adds a mental challenge even for experienced runners.
More than just a race, it’s a global movement with 100% of entry fees going towards spinal cord injury research.
| Distance | Date | Start location | Distance | Elevation |
| Catcher Car Format | 10 May | Zadar | Individual (until caught) | Flat |
Tour de Hvar: Serious trail or just run for wine?
Tour de Hvar is one of Croatia’s most versatile trail events, combining serious endurance racing with a more relaxed, experience-led approach.
One of its most unique features is the “Run for Wine” concept, a route designed around enjoyment rather than competition, with stops offering local wines and produce along the way.
For those seeking a challenge, longer distances deliver technical climbs, coastal ridgelines and demanding elevation gains across the island.
Whether you’re chasing a podium or pausing for a glass of local of red Plavac Mali, this event strikes a rare balance between performance and pleasure.
