4Dcell announced today that its SmartSphero plates have achieved over 95% reproducibility in organoid size and shape while reducing organoid loss to below 12% during medium exchanges, compared to 86% loss rates in traditional unanchored systems. The breakthrough addresses a critical challenge in pharmaceutical drug screening and safety testing where inconsistent organoid cultures have hindered reliable data collection.
The company’s patented Anchoring Point Technology (APT®) enables researchers to culture up to 5,000 uniform organoids per plate, all maintained on a single focal plane for simplified imaging. Recent validation studies using vascularized breast cancer models demonstrated maintained cell viability above 85% after seven days, with successful co-cultures including macrophages and endothelial cells.

The SmartSphero technology has been validated across multiple tissue types including breast, lung, and adipose models, with compatibility demonstrated for both immortalized cell lines and primary tissue dissociations. The plates integrate with standard automated liquid handling systems and conventional microscopy platforms, with testing completed up to 15 days of culture duration.
