3cat Sdn Bhd (3cat), a Malaysia-based circular-economy company, has signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) with XOX Bhd, Pos Malaysia Bhd, and JCL Credit Leasing Sdn Bhd, uniting industry leaders around a shared commitment to reduce electronic waste through more responsible electronics practices.
Electronic devices are essential to modern life, but the premature disposal of functional electronics has become a growing environmental challenge. With over one billion smartphones sold globally each year, manufacturing accounts for the majority of a device’s environmental impact. Reuse and refurbishment can significantly reduce emissions and material waste, avoiding up to 80 kg of CO₂ per device. Through this collaboration, the parties express a shared intent to encourage repair, refurbishment, reuse, and responsible end-of-life management of electronic devices within their organisations.

The MoC reflects a common belief that meaningful progress on sustainability is best driven through cross-sector collaboration and practical action, rather than isolated efforts. The collaboration is intended to demonstrate leadership by example, using shared commitments to help shape responsible norms and behaviours around electronics consumption and disposal across industries and communities.
The MoC was signed in conjunction with the launch of 3cat’s JomUpgrade event that celebrates sustainable consumption of electronic gadgets held from 9 to 15 February 2026 at Plaza Low Yat, Kuala Lumpur. The event serves as a live demonstration of circular economy principles in action, showcasing how refurbished devices, trade-ins, and alternative ownership models can help reduce e-waste while making technology more accessible to consumers.
Under the collaboration, the parties will seek to:
- Prioritise repair, refurbishment, and reuse of electronic devices where feasible
- Promote responsible electronics use within their organizations and relevant stakeholder communities
- Support alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
- Encourage environmentally sound disposal and recycling when reuse is no longer viable
The collaboration supports Malaysia’s broader sustainability and climate ambitions and demonstrates how industry leadership and cooperation can contribute to reducing e-waste and promoting responsible consumption practices nationwide.
