Sustainability Efforts At Top Animal Hospital Recognised With Award

An eco-friendly campaign to cut emissions, waste and costs has earned a leading small animal hospital a national environmental award.

Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Hampshire has received a bronze award from Investors in the Environment after a concerted sustainability initiative at the Linnaeus-owned referral centre.

Investors in the Environment (iiE) is a national accreditation scheme designed to help organisations reduce their impact on the environment.

Anderson Moores RVN and sustainability lead Becky Ward said the team had become incredibly engaged with the process and were enjoying learning new ways to reduce their impact on the environment both at work and home.

Becky explained: “We know how important it is for businesses to be more environmentally-friendly and it’s vital we back up our words with actions.

“With that in mind, we are really pleased to have earned a bronze award from iiE, as it reflects the sustained commitment shown by the team here to create and implement a new eco-friendly policy to reduce our environmental impact.

“Our changes range from simple things, such as composting and moving away from as many single use consumables as possible, to bigger changes such as using low-flow anaesthesia in theatre and measuring and monitoring electricity, gas and water usage.

“We are also creating a more biodiverse area by planting bee-friendly plants around the site and are planning to get team members involved in tree planting and beach cleaning projects.”

The iiE’s audit of Anderson Moores’ new practices was incredibly positive and stated: “The team at Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists has made an excellent start at understanding their environmental performance and establishing an Environmental Management System (EMS) to reduce their resource use and environmental impact.

“The senior management team are clearly engaged and contribute to its EMS, demonstrated by monthly update meetings, while their Green Champion Becky is also enthusiastic and committed to improving AMVS’ EMS.

“She is also clearly committed to improving AMVS’ environmental performance and has demonstrated a good understanding of resource use at the practice and implemented multiple initiatives to reduce the organisation’s environmental impact.

“The hospital has also undertaken a number of environmental/social projects to support staff wellbeing, enhance the environment and engage the team.”

The Investors in the Environment annual audit consists of an assessment of five key areas of an organisation’s EMS. These include:

  • Environmental policy
  • Resource management and monitoring
  • Progress against targets
  • Action planning including social/environmental projects
  • Communication

Ellie West, environmental sustainability lead at Linnaeus, said she was delighted Anderson Moores’ sustainability efforts had been recognised.

She said: “Many congratulations to the team at Anderson Moores on their bronze iiE award. I’m so pleased their efforts have been rewarded and look forward to working with them further as they continue on their journey and work towards silver accreditation.

“At Linnaeus, we focus strongly on quality of care and this translates to becoming a sustainable business and upholding our responsibilities to our clients, associates and communities.

“That’s why I am so excited to be leading our ambitious sustainability agenda, which strives to deliver a better future for everyone. I’m thrilled to see another of our Linnaeus partners recognised for their efforts.”
