A full complement of new and conventional winter cereal crop trials will come under scrutiny when more than 1,500 farmers and industry specialists head to the Shropshire/Staffordshire border for one of the Midlands’ leading farm events.
The Arable Event, organised by Wynnstay and GrainLink, returns bigger and better for its 10thanniversary show on June 19 at Weston-Under-Lizard.
Extensive crop trial plots presented by Wynnstay will include a wide variety of winter cereals including wheat, barley, oats, hybrid rye and triticale.
The trial plots have also been expanded this year to showcase a range of fertiliser and bio-stimulant demonstrations with industry leading fertiliser manufacturers Yara, ICL, LKAB and Omex on site to provide advice on their product ranges.
Danny Richardson, combinable seed product specialist at Wynnstay Group Plc, said: “The Arable Event demonstration trials will enable farmers to find out about the latest varieties of cereal seeds and will give them an opportunity to compare the key varieties in person.
“This year we will be showcasing SY Cheer – a newly recommended provisional group one milling wheat; Bamford – a new soft wheat from Elsoms which is joint top yielding and looks to have a strong disease profile, as well as LG Beowulf – a new entry hard feed wheat from Limagrain.
“On the barley front LG Capitol is the only new conventional barley which sits joint top of the RL. Also showcased will be the new hybrid barley SY Buzzard which boasts a BYDV tolerance.
“Cromwell will be making its first appearance at the Arable Event after a successful launch last year and is looking to rival Mascani in the milling oat sector.
“Lumaco triticale which is proving to be an advancement on KWS Fido will also be at the show and as we continue to recognise the increasing importance of bio-stimulants to the sector, we will also be demonstrating several foliar products.
“As always we will be inviting several leading manufacturers to demonstrate their products and we are delighted to announce that Corteva and UPL are already signed up to attend.”
The Arable Event is free to attend and will also offer visitors the chance to share knowledge and expertise and get hands-on experience of the latest farming machinery.
Technical seminars will also be run with guest speakers and keynote speaker Charlie Ireland, a farming consultant who is a regular feature on the hit show, Clarkson’s Farm, and a managing partner at leading consultancy Ceres Rural, will be making a return to the show.
He will be joined by influencer Olly ‘Blogs’ Harrison who became an “accidental YouTuber” at the start of lockdown and now has 118,000 subscribers to his channel, which posts daily video updates about life on his farm and as a contractor near Liverpool.

The Arable Event is held at Woodlands Farm, which is part of Bradford Estates on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border, close to Junction 3 of the M54. It starts at 9am and runs through to 5pm.
