Midlands housebuilder offers new apprenticeships for students

A Midlands housebuilder has announced that a number of apprenticeships are available to students in the region later this year.

The Redrow Midland’s apprenticeship scheme, which will open for applicants in Summer, will see successful candidates work at developments across the region including Redrow at Houlton in Rugby, Curborough Lakes in Lichfield and Kensington Gate in Worcester.

The four apprenticeships, which have been announced ahead of National Apprenticeship Week, will allow students with a passion for construction to build their vocational skills and will focus on different aspects of house building, including bricklaying and carpentry.

The intake follows the success of Redrow Midland’s ongoing apprenticeship scheme, which has been running since 2014. The scheme gives students in the local area an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and build a career in housebuilding.

Among the current cohort is Redrow apprentice, 20-year-old Emily Shaw, who is working towards completing an apprenticeship in Redrow Midlands’ commercial department.

Commenting on the apprenticeship, Emily said: “After spending two years at university, I fell out of love with law and decided to change paths. My whole family is in construction, so it seemed like the logical next step for me. I wanted to get paid and learn, as it is far more suited to my lifestyle.

“I have been doing the tender for some sites and I’m proud I’ve been able to communicate with subcontractors and doing things that I didn’t understand before joining a construction company.”

Also, among this year’s apprentices, is JJ Long, a 17-year-old engineering apprentice.

Speaking about his experience, JJ said, “I never really considered university as I wanted to do something more hands on. I felt like I had already done my stint in education and was ready for the next chapter.

“I love the design of Redrow’s houses and it’s so interesting to see how the home looks on its first sketch all the way through to completion.”

When asked why others should consider applying for an apprenticeship, JJ added: “I think it’s the best way to go – it’s so much better to do something hands on. For example, those who simply study courses don’t have a real grasp of what the day-to-day role would look like, it’s a lot of theory. But when you’re on an apprenticeship, you’re doing the job straight away. That’s very valuable and better prepares you for the world of work.”

Elaine Cartwright, Head of Sales at Redrow Midlands, added: “As part of our ongoing commitment to providing local apprenticeships to support and nurture the next generation of housebuilders, we ensure a number of opportunities are made available annually for apprenticeships with our team.

“We’re delighted to be welcoming four new apprentices to join Redrow Midlands for another year, particularly at such a challenging time for students who have had numerous disruptions to their studies over the last few years. These apprenticeships will provide ambitious learners with the opportunity to step straight into a career where they can gain hands-on experience and continue to learn.

“A large proportion of our apprentices choose to stay with Redrow once they have completed the scheme, becoming experts in their field as a result. We would encourage any upcoming school leavers looking for a rewarding career to apply to our scheme – we look forward to welcoming our next group of Redrow apprentices.”

Redrow Midlands currently has ten developments across Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire. These sought-after developments offer homes from the housebuilder’s award-winning Heritage Collection, with properties available for first-time buyers, those with growing families and right-sizers.
