Two Thirds Of UK SMEs At Risk From Website Hackers After ‘Taking Their Eye Off The Ball’

Two thirds of UK SMEs have left themselves open to hackers after neglecting website security during the Covid pandemic, new figures have revealed.

Manchester-based Eternal Digital Marketing said its research had shown 67 per cent of small and medium-sized enterprises had either cut back on e-security spending or simply taken their eye off the ball to concentrate on other priorities.

Eternal Digital Marketing Managing Director Mark Ormiston said there was now a “worryingly high level of businesses” at high risk from hackers because they have failed to take basic measures, such as setting up regular back-ups away from their hosting company, carrying out virus scans or updating website themes and plug-ins.

He said that for as little as £10 a month, businesses could protect themselves from serious hacking threats which could prevent them from continuing to trade.

Eternal Digital Marketing, which was set up ten years ago and offers a range of services, including website design, social media and reputation management, has now launched its WP Cover solution to help businesses get their e-security back on track.

Managing Director Mark Ormiston said: “It is incredibly worrying that two thirds of the UK’s SMEs are either oblivious to the threat from hackers or are worried about their website getting hacked and don’t know what to do about it.

“The confusion caused by Covid meant that many businesses took their eye off the ball when it came to web security, as they had a million and one other things to deal with.

“But just as fraudsters have used the post-pandemic era to increasingly target the general public and their bank accounts, so hackers are taking advantage of poor website security to gain access to sensitive and damaging information.

“While any hack is serious, many involve gaining access to client details, and breaches which could affect a business’s ability to continue trading.”

WP Cover provides peace of mind and security for WordPress websites by managing the site’s updates, back-ups and virus scans using leading, proven technology.
