North West sustainable heroes partner to launch gut-healthy drink

Two of the North West’s sustainability heroes have partnered to bring more great-tasting and environmentally-friendly products to the nation’s doorsteps.  Manchester-based Modern Milkman has partnered with Good Company, based in Preston, to deliver a brand-new, gut-healthy treat as part of its growing milkround. Kefir will now be delivered locally to doorsteps across the North West as well as in all Modern Milkman’s catchment areas nationwide.

Good for your gut, good for the planet, Good Company kefir is the first ever to be delivered in reusable glass bottles, preventing millions of plastic bottles from waste. The new addition is the latest in Modern Milkman’s rapidly expanding range of milks, juices, groceries and household goods delivered in refillable packaging,

The natural, creamy kefir is made using British cows’ milk and natural live cultures. Packed full of good bacteria, vitamins and minerals, it famously gives a nourishing boost to aid digestion and the immune system, as well as a host of other health benefits.

Modern Milkman is the 21st century answer to the traditional milkround. The B-Corp was set up in 2018, inspired by David Attenborough’s Blue Planet to fight the battle against plastic waste. It works with independent businesses to help the public to shop ethically and feel good about convenience – providing a sustainable grocery delivery service via an easy-to-use app.

CEO Simon Mellin said: “We take great pride in finding partners that share the same ethos as us. For us, good health is about looking after ourselves and the planet, and working with the great team at Good Company to launch our brand new kefir delivers just that.

“There’s been a huge amount of public interest in foods that can help improve our gut health and search interest in kefir increased by 200% this year – so we’re confident that this will be a very popular addition to the milkround*.”

Fran Harrison, Marketing Manager at Good Company said: “Our mission is all about inspiring a positive impact on our future through unique, great-tasting products. We’re delighted to be working with Modern Milkman to help bring kefir to doorsteps across the North West and the UK. We all have a responsibility to reduce waste, and we’re proud to be helping households to enjoy kefir in return and reuse glass bottles.”

Price: £2 per pint. Good Company kefir is available to purchase via Modern Milkman, as part of its sustainable grocery delivery service.  Sign up and order before 8pm for next day delivery. For more information and to check your local milkround, visit www.themodernmilkman.co.uk.

Notes to editors

In 2018, Modern Milkman was set up by four friends with a beat-up truck, inspired by Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet. Shocked by the amount of plastic in our oceans, they endeavoured to lead the battle against plastic waste.

Now boasting a growing number of eco-conscious milkmen and women, the 21st century’s answer to the traditional milkround, is on a mission to revolutionise consumer habits by delivering fresh ways to return and reuse packaging, shop ethically, and feel good about convenience.

Recently announced as the fourth-place winner for the Startups 100 Index 2023, Modern Milkman has also been awarded ‘Gold Standard Plastic Free Business Champion’ by Surfers Against Sewage and ranked 18 by RetailTech 50 in the ‘UK’s most innovative retail technology creators for 2022’. The brand also received the award for ‘Fastest Growing Company of the Year (with revenues under £10m in 2019)’ and ‘Overall Judges’ Award’ at the Northern Tech Awards 2022. Modern Milkman is the first climate technology company to ever take part in the exclusive Future 50 Tech Nation programme which began in September 2022.

In 2023, Modern Milkman has set a resolution to prevent the creation of 30 million plastic bottles throughout the year as it continues to work with its network of independent suppliers to deliver fresh, seasonal food and drink products straight to consumers’ doorsteps in returnable glass bottles, recyclable containers, and home-compostable packaging. Modern Milkman’s ‘Milkies’ collect empties to be refilled and reused again and again, helping to prevent over 80 million plastic bottles from polluting the planet, and counting!
