Leeds-based Indian street food business opens fifth outlet with new restaurant in Birmingham

Acclaimed Indian street food and craft beer specialist Bundobust, which is headquartered in Leeds, has opened the doors of its fifth restaurant – a new 120-cover outlet in Birmingham – with the help of a team of Yorkshire-based advisers.

The restaurant is the latest to be opened by Bradford entrepreneurs, chef Mayur Patel and craft beer bar owner Marko Husak, who founded the business back in 2014. Serving contemporary vegetarian and vegan Gujarati street food, Bundobust Birmingham complements the group’s existing restaurants in Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester Piccadilly, plus the Bundobust Brewery in Oxford Street, Manchester. The company now employs over 120 people across its five locations.

Housed in a Grade II listed building, Bundobust Birmingham is split across two floors, and has an intimate, pub-like feel, with lots of communal bar seating, as well as cosy corners and snug semi-private spaces, making it ideal for groups and gatherings of all sizes. On the menu is Bundobust’s award-winning Indian street food and craft beer.

A new 15-year lease of the Birmingham premises in Bennetts Hill was completed by Clarion’s property practice with a team led by partner Simon Mydlowski and including Lucy Entwistle. Alongside this, Amy Buttrick of Clarion’s corporate team advised on an asset purchase of certain assets at the property from the outgoing tenant which completed in conjunction with the new lease. In addition, business immigration expert Anna-Elise Harvey from Clarion’s employment team supported Bundobust in obtaining a sponsor licence to enable the continued employment of three Indian chefs as well as allowing it to apply for a further two chefs from India to take up roles in the UK with Bundobust.

“We’re really excited to be opening in Birmingham, a city with a rich history of South Asian culture,” explains co-founder Marko Husak. “With everything from fantastic old school boozers to modern craft beer bars and world-class breweries, we feel like the city is a perfect fit for us. We think with Bundobust’s approach to Indian street food and brewery fresh beer we can add something unique to complement Birmingham’s already fantastic food and drink scene.”

Simon Mydlowski of Clarion adds: “The opening of the Birmingham restaurant marks another important step in Bundobust’s growth journey. I’m sure the Bundo offering will prove equally popular in the Midlands and we look forward to continuing to support the business’ ambitious expansion programme to roll-out across the UK.”

About Bundobust Indian Street Food & Craft Beer. Bundobust was born out of a collaboration between two Bradford boys, Mayur Patel and Marko Husak. In 2013, Mayur asked Marko on Twitter to collaborate on a street food event. Mayur’s family own Prashad – one of the UK’s most highly regarded Indian restaurants – while Marko operated cult craft beer spot, The Sparrow Bier Café in Bradford. Bringing together curry and beer the pair set out to update the classic combo, focusing on authentic dishes and boundary-pushing brews. After a string of sold-out events and pop-ups, the combination of Gujarati street food and craft beer proved too powerful a pairing to not pursue. Patel and Husak went on to open the first Bundobust restaurant in Leeds in 2014, with Bundobust Manchester Piccadilly following in 2016, Bundobust Liverpool in 2019, and Bundobust Brewery in 2021. Critically acclaimed and widely regarded as a game changing enterprise within the independent food and drink industry, Bundobust has forged itself as a beacon of successful casual dining in the North. The pair have this year opened their fifth restaurant in Birmingham.
